The 4-week programme is designed to engage young people aged 16-18 who are NEET with real opportunities for progression. Hybrid Arts are working with the group of 11 students to produce a number of creative products – they have decided they would like to make a music video, design some graphics and undertake some creative writing.

The bright and talented students in the Year 12 and 13 Creative Technology groups at Campion School have just completed the work for their final creative project – and the finished results are something they should be very proud of.

As part of their course the group attended sessions at Hybrid Arts’s creative technology studio at the school. This is a continued successful collaboration with this dynamic secondary school, where we have had studios installed for six years. This relationship has gone from strength to strength and we have been able to bring our brand of creative learning to more students. In partnership with a school with the vision to apply creative technology to bring out the best in all their students. The current cohort have produced a very high standard of work which is both individual and expressive, and demonstrates technical maturity. Most of the group will come away with A’s and B’s and their hard work sets these students in good stead for their career development.

The specialist creative arts and technology training we supply is working on the premise that we can’t know what jobs young people will be training for in 20 years time – but we can be certain they will be based on manipulation of ICT. This puts the Hybrid training model on the map nationally.

Over the summer we will be developing exciting plans to provide a new series of opportunities for young people to experience creative technology outside of the training studio, and apply these skills to real life situations.

The student’s progression is looking very positive – virtually all of the group want to go to university and gain degrees in subjects ranging from international business, advertising and games development to animation and 2D and 3D design. When quizzed abut their aspirations for the future, we learned about plans to forge careers in technology, computer graphics and gaming.

As part of our Hybrid Musical Youth project we have started a series of music technology sessions at Bedworth Heath Youth Club. The ten places were quickly filled and some participants have already created their own ring tones using professional music software Logic Studio.

The group of young producers are all interested in different kinds of music from pop to grime. Learning music technology in an out of school setting is intended to increase musical confidence and have an impact on the young person’s ability to engage in the music curriculum when back in school. Youth worker at Bedworth Heath, Paul Walsh, said: “It’s great to see this group of young people so engaged in something positive.”

We are proud to be working with Warwickshire Youth and Community Service with the provision of Youth Club facilities for us to be able to offer these free sessions. Hybrid Musical Youth is funded by Youth Music.

Another project about to start in Bedworth is with a small group of NEETs. On Track will run at Bedworth Youth Club during June and July, the course is Interactive Media including training in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Dreamweaver and Flash. On Track runs in partnership with North Warwickshire and Hinckley College.

Both initiatives make full use of our state of the art mobile studio facilities.

Tim Ellis, Creative Director and Kerry Mawby, Media Technical Assistant, visited MACE (Media Archive for Central England) to view archive footage they hope to use in a project.

The visit was part of Hybrid Arts’s ‘Extraordinary Cycles’ film element, which involves getting young people to mash up archive footage along with new footage. Some of these sessions will take place at Coventry Transport Museum’s ‘Festival of Cycling’, taking place in June half term, and culminating in a public screening of the work on Saturday 5th June. Funding for the project is provided by Screen West Midlands.

Ellis said of the visit: “It was a very interesting experience seeing vintage film equipment still in use. Richard Shenton talked us through the process of transferring archive material from original film stock into a digital format, which we are planning to use in our digital editing sessions.”

Hybrid Arts are pleased to announce we have received funding from the Henry VIII Endowed Trust to deliver creative technology training sessions in Warwick this coming half term.We will be offering free creative training to young people from Warwick District during the June half term break. Young people will have the opportunity to work alongside professional artists to produce original music, video and graphics. The project will build upon our hugely successful delivery in Warwick during the February half term, where young people dropped into a temporary creative lab we organised at the glass octagon in the town centre, thanks to support from Warwick Relief in Need. In June we hope to bring this unique opportunity to more local young people, keeping them off the streets and engaged during the school holidays.

After a pause of eighteen years, Tim Ellis has instigated the return of Jackdaw with Crowbar, the seminal multi media group. The group were pioneers in the field of multi projection film montage as performance with live music in the eighties and early nineties. “Back then we had a group of up to eight musicians and three projectionist film makers, we were entirely analogue using 8mm film and actual musical instruments or sound devices. This time round three of us are using modern technology to create a new set of material. I can recollect many occasions on tour when one of the film makers would be editing in the back of the truck because the films used to break from repeated use at concerts. Now we use laptops and digital projectors so in theory its more stable, and brighter. Although we miss the texture, depth and colour of film we are spoilt by the immediacy of working in digital.”

Ellis is working with former JwC members collage artist, lyricist and actor Adam Sindall and lyricist, actor and community theatre activist Fergus Durrant. The group will be screening some of the new films and performing this month at:
