Designer Catherine Makin has been working with Hybrid young people on up-cycling clothing and customisation. “Being able to create your own identity helps with boosting confidence and also helps developing skills that can be used any time, on all kinds of garments. It also helps to create new looks on a budget.”

“One of the things we’ve been working on is slashing and weaving. This is such a simple technique and requires only jersey fabric (T-shirts) and scissors! It can be done using an old T-shirt regardless of the size, as this technique can change the size and fit too.”

“You simply cut / slash lines in any place you choose, only making sure they are parallel with the weave of the fabric. Once cut, the trips are pulled to stretch out the fabric. Each strip is then pulled under and over the strip below until reaching the last strip which is tied off in any way you want.”
