Diploma

Hybrid Arts are working with both Eastern and Central Area Consortium in the development and delivery of the new Creative and Media Diploma to students from Campion School and Southam School.

What is a Diploma?

A new qualification for 14-19 year olds, the Diploma is a combination of existing qualifications and purpose-designed qualifications to make up a two year course. The Diploma is designed to support your next move – whether that’s further study at school or college, work-related training, going on to university or a job with training.

Routes to success for all

Vocational education for young people has often failed to command the confidence of employers, higher education and the general public. Employers have expressed real concerns about whether those who leave school at 16 with relatively few qualifications really have the basic skills, especially in maths and communication, which they will need for work.

We have never in this country had a vocational education track that is as well understood as the academic one, nor one which has been seen as a naturally effective means of preparing young people for work or further study, even though it works well for learners. We need to break down the artificial barriers between academic and vocational education. 14-19 reform puts employers in the lead through Sector Skills Councils, in designing specialised Diplomas which provide the right grounding for work and further study, supported by higher education and the QCA.

The Diploma in Creative and Media looks at four main areas:

1. Creativity in context: The things that can influence the creative process, such as society, culture, the environment or the work of other people

2. Thinking and working creatively: Ways of exploring, experimenting with and developing ideas, skills and techniques

3. Principles, processes and practice: The skills, techniques and processes to turn your ideas into reality

4. Creative businesses and enterprise: An understanding of real situations and the skills that you need to succeed in the industry

At Foundation level (the same as 5 GCSEs at grades D to G) you are introduced to these ideas and skills; at Higher level (the same as 7 GCSEs at grades A* to C ) you get to explore them more, and at Advanced level (the same as 3.5 A levels) you develop your understanding and skills in greater depth.

These are some of the things students will be doing on the course:

* Use your creative skills and ideas to make something

* Learn how to work up ideas, alone and in a team

* Learn about the work of other artists and how it relates to your own work

* Explore different creative disciplines

* Find out what you’re passionate about: from music to drama, film to textiles, 3D visual art to advertising

* See a project through from start to finish

* Identify an audience and their needs, and how this affects your work

* And find out about the business side of a creative project, like budgeting, team working and marketing your ideas and products
